Drosophila melanogaster (small fruit flies). An excellent starter food for, for example, newly metamorphosed frogs and newly hatched lizards. If the animals have access to UV light, vitamin supplements are unnecessary. It is beneficial to allow the animals to eat the larvae, as their stomachs are filled with the culture medium. The medium is made from fresh vegetables, organic rolled oats, and spirulina.
For poison dart frogs, they can serve as a supplementary or complete diet for smaller species. For instance, Oophaga species breed more successfully and do not require vitamin supplements when they have access to flies and larvae, provided they are kept under UV light (6% UVB).
